Last week, Nissan launched its All-New X-Trail, its compact SUV in the Middle East. More rounded and packed with technology, the once boxy SUV was earlier revealed at the Frankfurt Motor Show. The all-new X-Trail will be available from AED 78,500 onwards.

While enhancing its predecessor’s ‘go-anywhere’ credibility, the new X-Trail takes forward the design of the Qashqai, Juke and Murano – to create a modern family vehicle that thrives in all weathers. Built on the new jointly-developed Nissan/Renault Common Module Family (CMF) platform architecture, the 2015 X-Trail will aim at crossing half a million units in 190 countries.

The new X-Trail has heavy targets to shoulder. It displaces the old X-Trail and the Qashqai. Wise move. Ambitious Nissan plans project a combined sales of 4500 for both the models to rise to 10000 with the new X-Trail. And why not?

The new X-Trail will be fully connected with the latest generation NissanConnect in-car navigation, information and entertainment system. Drivers will also benefit from a comprehensive suite of assistance features that make up the X-Trail’s Nissan Safety Shield system. NissanConnect will offer Smartphone connectivity, with access to a projected range of apps covering music, social networking and a 7-inch colour touch screen. The system includes Bluetooth audio streaming and mobile phone integration as well as Aux-in and USB slots. The 5 inch TFT colour display will offer advice and warnings on average and actual speeds, turn-by-turn navigation instructions, audio content, eco driving advice and torque distribution settings in 4WD mode.
Sculptured muscular lines create a distinctive silhouette framed by elegant curves and high wheel arches. Its features include a number of Nissan signature cues such as the ‘boomerang’ rear lights, structured headlights with LED daytime running lamps and the characteristic D-pillar shape. LED headlights, for both high and low beams, are standard on high grade models while 18-inch alloy wheels also give new X-Trail an imposing look.

The spacious interior has theatre-style seating making the rows progressively higher for better visibility for all. Unique for the compact SUV category is the option of two extra seats. Thoughtful features include rear side doors that open to almost 80 degrees, making it easy to take a child’s safety seat in and out. There is more legroom in the rear, thanks to a longer wheelbase and a considerate front seat. Remote-operated tailgate is another thoughtful touch.

The X-Trail is available in 2-wheel and 4-wheel drives. Active Ride Control and Active Engine Brake are world’s firsts which were premium territory so far. Active Ride Control monitors the road surface to detect undulations. Active Engine Brake, meanwhile, harnesses the power and controllability of the Xtronic transmission to add a degree of engine braking while cornering or when decelerating to a standstill. The benefits are greater braking control and enhanced feel with less pedal effort.

Active Trace Control, so far a premium prerogative uses sensors to brake wheels individually, to reduce understeer and promote safer driving through bends and slippery roads. The new X-Trail also benefits from Uphill Start Support and Advance Hill Descent Control. Weight reduction has been achieved in the new X-Trail, though it has a larger surface area than earlier, through innovations like the tailgate being largely plastic, saving seven kilograms.
