What do you do when you have reached the peak? Climb it all over again. That’s exactly what Walter Röhrl is doing – twenty-five years later.

Walter Röhrl returns 25 years later to Pikes Peak in the same Audi Sport Quattro S1

Spectators in the US state of Columbia will be able to relive a milestone in the history of sport-climbing when the legendary rally driver Walter Röhrl races up Pikes Peak in the Audi Sport Quattro S1 that long ago enabled him to scale the famous hill climb in record time. On July 11, 1987, when Walter drifted up Pikes Peak – also known as the “race to the clouds” – on the wings of the nearly 600 hp dragon, things were quite different. The road to heaven was a dirt track but today it is a paved one. Which is why, despite others who have clocked faster race times, his record of 10 minutes and 48 seconds still remains special. It was a milestone in the history of the oldest hill climb in the United States and also a milestone for Audi.

Walter Röhrl storms the Pikes Peak in record time with the Audi Sport Quattro S1 bringing Audi its third successive win in 1987.

On July 8th, Röhrl will be taking on America’s oldest hill climb, yet again. This time around, not under race conditions though the course will still be challenging as it snakes through 150 curves over 20 kilometers before culminating at the top, 4301 metres closer to the clouds.
