On 16th September, the land of the pyramids turned into the launch venue and testing grounds of the new Geely Monjaro EM-i.

In the midsummer of 2026, many midsize SUVs were launched by various brands – each meant to complement the other, forming a pair of turbo-driven petrol engine and hybrid with an electric motor. The interest in hybrids has been warming up for a while now. Kaiyi, Soueast, Lepas, Geely… the list of twins in this line up is growing!

Test drive in Cairo

So, we media people from around the world (UAE, Peru and Spain too) were bunched up in the new Monjaro EM-i soon after breakfast. The Monjaro EM-i was also given its fill of petrol and a map spread on the new 15.4” central screen to go see places around Cairo (and on the way, try getting to know our new SUV that will take you around!.

Cairo has many sweeping bridges and urban highways. It has pedestrians picking berries in the garden, while they are crossing the street too. It has cars squeezing into spaces that aren’t there, braking just in time to backout into the next lane. So, we had keys to the new Monjaro EM-i with the extra power of a hybrid and a tour list to tick – leaving us with selfies in front of Giza pyramids (or their parking lot to be more precise), the Cairo Citadel, Salahuddin Mosque and Hyatt Regency. Even after touring almost the entire city, the fuel gauge was skewed towards the horn of plenty.

In the evening, the technical presentation and the announcement of a bold achievement worth a Guinness record was to be celebrated. Read the story. The presentation also provided a glimpse of how Geely Architecture can power the future of global travel with five different, adaptable platforms.

Monjaro EM-i is a PHEV model and a combined power of 335 hp climbs, brakes and quickly switches lanes. The Monjaro EM-i is Geely’s first global D-SUV—positioned as a premium hybrid SUV—with clear advantages in hybrid performance, road command, safety, comfort and intelligence. Monjaro EM-i comes with Continuous Damping Control Suspension system that adjusts itself up to 50 times per second, with a response time of 20 milliseconds—achieving uninterrupted comfort across gravel, ruts and hard-rock areas.

Those qualities that made it the best among Geely models remain, plus the fuel economy of a Plug-in hybrid. The smooth and reassuring drive train, plenty of space, classy interiors and the collaboration with Volvo remain as the pillars of an extraordinary model. The EV range alone is around 130 km, while the combined range is 1200 km. While the petrol engine can keep the Monjaro on the move, DC charging time from 30% – 80% is only 15 min!

Urban car for space and comfort

This essentially describes the Geely Monjaro EM-i but the intelligent electric AWD system can hold a few surprises up its sleeve. Talking about adaptability for comfort, the rear seat can be folded down for more cargo space, or held comfortably straight or again, recline for business class relaxation. The wow! feature here would be the industry-first massage seats with acupressure. After a walk like an Egyptian into the pyramid, a massage on the way back was a box to tick.
